Description

The same cotton museum board without the alkaline buffer, for the material that a buffer damages. Protein-based objects — wool, silk, leather, parchment, feather — and gelatin-binder photographs are harmed by an alkaline environment, and housing them in buffered board is one of the most common and most quietly destructive specification errors in collection care. The board is otherwise identical: cotton fibre, four-ply solid, neutral pH at manufacture. Because the two look the same on a shelf and are catastrophic to confuse, every sheet is edge-marked UNBUFFERED along one long edge and the pack is wrapped in a different colour. If you hold both in one store, keep them apart and keep the wrapping on.
