Description

A cast-iron nipping press for consolidating a text block, setting a case and pressing work flat between boards. The frame is a single casting, machined flat on both platens and finished in a hard enamel; the screw is a square-thread Acme running in a bronze nut, which is what lets the press be wound down under load without the thread binding or wearing to slop. A nipping press is not a laying press and is not used for sewing or backing — it applies uniform vertical pressure over the full platen and nothing else, which is exactly what pressing wants. Weight is the specification: at this size the press must be heavy enough not to walk on the bench under a hard nip, and this one is not light. Bolt-down holes are cast into the feet. Supplied assembled, levelled and with the platens protected; it needs a solid bench and two people to place it.
