Description

A straight, round-section awl for piercing sewing stations through a folded section. The blade is ground to a long taper and polished, so it opens a round hole that closes back onto the thread rather than a slit that tears along the grain under tension. That distinction matters: a flat or diamond blade belongs to leatherwork, and using one on a text block leaves a weakness at every station. The handle is turned from ash and finished with oil, sized to sit in the palm so the tool can be driven from the shoulder rather than the fingers. Supplied with the blade seated in the ferrule; it can be reset or replaced without heat. Keep the point polished — a dull awl compresses fibre instead of parting it, and the compression shows on the finished spine.
