Description

The bone folder is the first tool a binder buys and the last one they replace. Ours are cut from polished cattle bone, hand-finished to a working point at one end and a broad burnishing face at the other, then edge-eased so the tool will not score paper on the first pass. Bone is preferred over plastic in conservation work because it burnishes a fold without leaving a shine or transferring polymer to the sheet, and because it takes a personal edge as it wears. Each folder is dressed by hand, so the profile varies very slightly between pieces. Use the broad face for setting folds and casing in, and the point for working a joint or opening a spine fold. Wash with warm water only; do not soak, and do not leave it near heat. With reasonable care a bone folder outlasts the bench it is used on.
