Description
A traditional beech sewing frame: a flat bed, two threaded uprights and a crossbar that raises to put the tapes or cords under even tension while the sections are sewn on. Tension is the entire function. Sewn by hand off the frame, the supports go slack in places and tight in others, and the resulting text block is uneven along the spine in a way that cannot be corrected afterwards by any amount of backing or pressing. Wooden threads on the uprights rather than metal, so the crossbar can be brought up under load without racking the frame square out of true. Lay cords are held in slotted keys under the bed. Beech, oiled, and supplied assembled — the frame wants standing on a bench at a height that lets you sew sitting down, because you will be there a while.
