Headband Silk, Two-Colour — 5 m

Description

Two-colour silk for sewing headbands, wound on a card in 5 m lengths. A sewn headband is not decoration, although it is usually mistaken for it: it consolidates the head and tail of the spine, takes the strain when someone pulls the book off a shelf by the headcap — which everyone does — and it is the reason a well-made book does not tear at the top of the spine first. Silk is used for its strength at fine diameter and because it takes a bead cleanly, which cotton does not. Two colours are supplied so the bead can be worked in alternation over a core, which is the standard double-core pattern. Five metres does a substantial run of ordinary octavo work.
