Starch-Filled Book Cloth — per metre

Description

A cotton cloth backed with paper and filled with starch, for fine binding, boxes and any work where the cloth must take paste and where a pyroxylin sheen would be wrong. The paper backing is the point: it stops adhesive striking through to the face, which is what ruins an unbacked cloth the first time it is pasted out. Starch fill leaves the hand of the cloth soft and matte, so it takes a blind tool and shows the grain of the weave rather than a plastic gloss. It is not water-resistant and should not be specified for circulating stock — this is a cloth for boxes, for cased work that will live on a shelf, and for conservation housings where reversibility matters more than abrasion. Sold by the running metre from a 900 mm roll.
